When you know you’ve hired the right professional for the job!
Recently, I left my physiotherapist’s office, assured that he had truly acted in my best interests. What prompted these warm feelings? Far from angling for more business in the future, he did the opposite: “Don’t come back to me,” he said with a smile, “unless you have a new problem in a different area of your body.”
With him, as with all professionals, I listen carefully to their advice and (usually) heed their instructions. But also follow the money trail: What does the professional stand to gain financially from my services, both now and in the future? Is their advice primarily for my benefit - or their own (even if it is not what I expected)?
If you’re meeting the professional for the first time and you sense that he or she is selling you on a service you didn’t know you needed and you’re not sure it will help you, do feel free to excuse yourself from that meeting. Pay close attention to your gut feeling - leave graciously and decisively, and never return. There are indeed professionals out there who truly care for their clients and patients. It’s worth taking the time and making the effort to find them!
